Archdiocese of Philadelphia Proposed 10th Synod

 Collection
Identifier: MC 100

Scope and Contents

This collection mainly contains plans and correspondence for the proposed 10th Synod of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in the 1960s. The bulk of the collection contains statutes and plans from the various preparatory commissions. There is also material from earlier Philadelphia synods, namely the 9th Synod under Cardinal Dougherty. The last two boxes contain material likely added to the collection later as they contain booklets and material from other dioceses’ synods that took place after the proposed Philadelphia one.

Dates

  • Majority of material found within 1962 - 1965
  • 1832 - 1987

Biographical / Historical

Cardinal Krol announced the synod of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on February 11, 1963. Bishop McDevitt was placed in charge of planning with meetings starting in March of 1963. After two years of preparatory commissions, the ground was laid for the synod to take place. Final recommendations by the central commission were finished in January of 1965. However, the synod was never assembled, possibly because of the recent conclusion of the Second Vatican Council and the importance of implementing the new canon law.
