Scope and Contents

The collection contains material relating to the ordination of Louis Anthony DeSimone and Francis Bible Schulte to Auxiliary Bishops in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The collection includes both planning material and ephemera from the day of the ordination on August 12, 1981. The collection also contains lists of invitees as well has photographs and a VHS tape of the ordination.

Biographical / Historical

Bishop Anthony DeSimone was born in 1922 and served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war he entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and was ordained by Cardinal O’Hara in 1952. DeSimone taught at St. Thomas More High School as well has served as the director of the Catholic Relief Services. On June 27, 1981 he was named auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia as well as Titular Bishop of Cillium. Bishop DeSimone passed away on October 5, 2018 at the age of 96. Archibbishop Francis Schulte was born in 1926 and entered St. Charles Borromeo Seminary out of high school. He was ordained by Cardinal O’Hara in 1952. He taught at a number of Catholic high schools and would go on to serve as superintendent of schools. On June 27, 1981 he was named auxiliary bishop of Philadelphia and would then be appointed the Bishop of Wheeling-Charleston, West Virginia in 1985. Schulte would go on to serve as the Archbishop of New Orleans in 1989. Archbishop Schulte passed away on January 17, 2016
